나는 한국의 중학생인 김리현입니다. 글렌데인 시가 속해있는 이 미국도 식민지배를 당하던 시절이 있었지요. 우리 나라 또한 다른 나라에 의해 식민지배를 당하며 민족의 문화와 정신이 없어질 뻔하였습니다. 그리고 그 나라에 의해 희생된 많은 사람들, 특히 성노예로 이용되며 인간이라면 당연히 누려야 할 최소한의 기본권조차 지켜지지 못하였던 위안부의 할머니들이 계십니다. 그리고 해외에 최초로 평화의 소녀상이 세워진곳은 이곳 캘리포니아주의 글렌데일입니다. 이곳을 직접 방문하는 것이 저와 제 가족들에게는 큰 기쁨입니다. 사실 부끄럽게도 우리 나라에는 2011년이 되어서야 위안부의 피해를 상징하는 평화의 소녀상이 세워지기 시작했는데요, 소녀상이 처음으로 세워진 곳은 한국의 수도인 서울의 종로구, 일본 대사관 앞입니다. 위안부 문제의 해결을 촉구하라는 뜻에서 세워지기 시작한 것이죠. 최근에도 한국의 각종 언론들에서 평화의 소녀상이 다시 한 번 크게 거론된 일이 있었는데요, 지난 7월 31일, 일본의 아사히신문에서 보도한 바에 따르면, 8월 1일 일본 아이치현에서 정(情)의 시대라는 주제로 국제 예술제 아이치 트리엔날레 2019가 개막하고, 개최 장소 중 한 곳인 아이치 예술문화센터에서는 표현의 부자유전·그 뒤 기획전이 열려, 소녀상을 비롯한 20여개의 작품이 전시된다고 하였습니다. 이후 일본 정부와 지자체가 전시를 중단시킬 움직임을 보였고, 논란이 커지자 전시회 측은 예술제 개최 하루뒤인 2일, 평화의 소녀상 촬영을 금지시켰습니다. 결국 평화의 소녀상 전시는 사흘만에 중단되었습니다. 후에 알려진 사실이지만 오무라 아이치현 지사는 소녀상을 철거하지 않으면 가솔린통을 들고 전시회에 들르겠다. 라는 내용의 팩스를 받았다고 합니다. 그렇지만, 그러면 협박범을 속히 잡아야지 왜 전시를 중단하였을까요. 협박과 그에 대응이 어렵다는 이유로 전시를 중단한다는 것은 단지 핑곗거리일 뿐이지 않을까요? 일본내에서도 소녀상의 전시를 이어가 달라는 요청이 많은걸로 아는데 왜 그런 여론은 전혀 반영하지 않는걸까요. 우리 나라는 일본에게 1910년부터 1945년까지 식민지배를 당했습니다. 비록 지나간 일이라 하더라도 아직까지 그 피해를 기억하시는 분들은 많이 계십니다. 본인이 직접 피해를 겪으신 분들도, 부모님께 전해들어 알고 있는 분들도 계시지요. 저는 이 일들에 대해 일본측에서 인정을 해야 하고, 저희 나라가 사과를 받아야 한다고 생각합니다. 강제징용, 창씨개명, 병참 기지화, 조선 총독부 건설, 국가총동원법 제정 및 공포 등.. 없었던 것처럼 덮어버릴 수는 없는 일들이죠. 물론 일본 정가에서 우리 나라에게 사과를 한 적은 있습니다만, 현재 일본의 총리인 아베총리가 그를 한국의 압박때문에 어쩔 수 없이 한 것이라며 부정하였습니다. 일본과 우리나라는 이웃나라입니다. 그래서 일본이 아무리 미워도 아예 관계를 끊을 수는 없습니다. 그렇지만 그렇다고 해서 다 없던 일로 하고 넘어갈 수도 없습니다. 일본 정부에게서 공식적인 사과를 받아내야 합니다. 일본 내에서도 과거의 잘못을 인정하고 사과하자는 목소리가 나오고 있습니다. 일본과의 관계가 다시 회복되는 것도 아주 먼일은 아닐 것입니다. 제 편지를 여기까지 읽으셨다면 이해하시겠지만 평화의 소녀상은 우리 나라 사람들에게는 특히나 더 큰 의미가 있는 상징물입니다. 글렌데일 시민 여러분께서 평화의 소녀상을 세우고 지켜나가는 모든 순간들에 많은 노력을 기울여 주시는 점, 정말 감사드립니다. 저 또한 우리 나라의 국민으로서, 글렌데일 시민 여러분과 마찬가지로 세계의 여러 문제들에 귀기울이고 타인의 고통에 외면하거나 침묵하지 않겠습니다. 폭력에 희생당한 수많은 사람들의 아픔을 절대 잊지 않고 되새기며, 외면당한 사람들을 위로하고 세계평화를 위해 노력하겠습니다. 앞으로도 평화의 소녀상을 통해 인류의 평화를 바라는 간절한 마음이 많은 사람들에게 전해지도록 꾸준한 관심과 격려 부탁드립니다. 아름다운 도시 글렌데일의 시민 여러분 모두가 행복한 삶을 살아가기를 기도하겠습니다. 평화의 소녀상을 지켜주셔서 정말 감사드립니다. 글렌데일 시민 여러분, 언제나 행복하세요! 2019. 8. 3 대한민국에서 글렌데일을 찾아온 김리현 |
